Understanding habitat degradation is crucial for the sustainable management of freshwater biodiversity and long-term ecosystem health.

Abstract

Freshwater ecosystems support a high diversity of fish species and provide essential ecological services such as food supply, nutrient cycling, and livelihood opportunities for human populations. However, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by habitat degradation caused by both natural and anthropogenic activities. Habitat degradation refers to the deterioration of environmental conditions necessary for the survival, growth, and reproduction of freshwater fish. Major drivers include pollution, dam construction, deforestation, climate change, overexploitation of water resources, and urbanization. This chapter discusses the concept of habitat degradation, its causes, impacts on freshwater fish populations, and possible conservation and management strategies.
