Abstract

Much emphasis has been paid to the harmful effects of potassium bromate on humans. The current study aims to investigate the protective effects of leaf extract of Moringa oleifera against potassium bromate-induced hepatic toxicity. Thirty-five albino rats of almost equal weight and size were divided into seven groups of five rats each. Group A was treated as a control group and given normal water, while groups B, E & G were treated with potassium bromate (200 mg/kg body wt.) for 7, 15 & 30 days, and groups C, D & F were treated with potassium bromate + Moringa oleifera  (200 mg/kg body wt. + 250 mg/kg body wt.) for 3, 7 & 15 days, respectively. All therapies were administered orally once a day for thirty days. The albino rats were sacrificed by decapitation, and the liver was dissected out, blotted of blood, rinsed in the phosphate buffer saline (pH 7.4), and immediately processed for histopathology. KBrO₃ administration caused distortion and damage to the liver tissue architecture. The improvement in liver damage caused by KBrO₃ in Moringa oleifera supplementation groups indicates that Moringa oleifera extract provided a reasonable level of integrity in the liver. Moringa oleifera, as an antioxidant, combats the free radical damaging mechanism of KBrO₃. Body weight, liver weight, and ratio have all fallen dramatically as a result of the harmful effect of potassium bromate but have nearly returned to normal after supplementation with Moringa oleifera extract.
